The Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library honored the 2008 Spirit of Literacy Awards recipients at Civic Center Library. Recipients were librarian and collection management lead, Joanne Hamilton-Selway; former Mayor William "Bill" Jenkins (posthumous) with widow, Sue Jenkins accepting; and Cactus Shadows High School/Arizona Veterans Heritage Project students and teacher Barbara Hatch.

The Spirit of Literacy Awards was founded by the the Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library in 2002. The Spirit of Literacy Awards were first awarded in 2002, and have recognized individuals, foundations, and corporations who support libraries and literacy in Scottsdale. The Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization whose members support Scottsdale’s library system through public education, advocacy and fundraising.
