On May 27, 2021, Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega is interviewed by Joan Fudala about the water issues in Scottsdale. Mayor Ortega begins by a brief family history of the Ortega family and the reliance on water for ranching life. Mayor Ortega moved to Scottsdale in 1978 and worked as an architect and later was elected a city councilperson from 2000-2004 until later on he was elected mayor in November 2020. Ortega sees the Scottsdale Water Department as providing a sustainable water system that excels on innovation and conservation issues. He was proud of the many partnerships Scottsdale has with other valley cities and also Salt River Project for the Scottsdale Waterfront along the Arizona Canal. He shared about city initiatives that citizens can benefit from like rebates for xeriscaping in place of lawns and filling in swimming pools. The mayor expressed his concerns about the ongoing drought which is affecting the southwest and the Central Arizona Project. He feels that Scottsdale is in a good position with providing great water delivery and excellent water conservation efforts.

In 2021, the City of Scottsdale Water Department celebrated its 50-year anniversary. Scottsdale City Cable and community historian Joan Fudala interviewed several Water Department employees and city government officials to reminisce about the history of the department. These interviews were conducted in April and May 2021.
