The legendary magical compass Alissa thought was lost years ago by her nobility family is now being used by a mysterious villain to slay magic users like her, and using her magic has never been more dangerous. With a misguided childhood best friend looking out for her, a foreign ambassador who just might have powers of his own, and a Prince vying for her affection, Alissa navigates relationships, court complexities, and pulls strings to tie her own future together. As far as romantasy books go, this one felt unique, with a main character who prioritized friendships and got herself out of danger without help most of the time. There were plenty of satisfying mysteries to unravel, romances to explore, and ball gowns to wear. The magic felt new, a sort of telekinesis that connects to one's soul, so the phantom magic is a physical part of the Wielder, like a limb, with many interesting limitations attached. This author's next book in this series is "Sharpest Court", and I'd recommend reading this book if you've enjoyed "These Hollow Vows" by Lexi Ryan, "Twin Crowns" by Catherine Doyle, "Shadow and Bone" by Leigh Bardugo, or "Red Queen" by Victoria Aveyard! -- Library Staff Review (Megan K.)
