This photograph shows the citrus groves that were prevalent in the Scottsdale area before being replaced by houses. These are in the Arcadia District. The foreground shows the Arizona Canal. The east-west street above is Lafayette Boulevard, and above that is Exeter Boulevard. Camelback Road runs along the north side of the groves. Camelback Mountain is in the background.
In the 1930's a 1500 acre area of Scottsdale, located just south of Camelback Mountain, was planted with orange and grapefruit trees. An extensive system of underground water pipes were installed to irrigate the trees. In the 1960's many homes were built among the trees and the area became known as the Arcadia neighborhood, in reference to the Arcadia Water Company which even now continues to provide irrigation water in the area.
