Interviewed by Joan Fudala. Interview summary- Joining the City of Scottsdale as a member of the Preserve team in 2008, Schweitzer’s job varied widely and included helping hikers in trouble, fixing or building a trail, or working at the trailheads. The City of Scottsdale staff that works the Preserve consists of 5 to 6 people to care for all 30,000 acres and all of them work with volunteer stewards who patrol and do maintenance at the trailheads and on the trails. Robbin discusses the challenges of dealing with such a large area with so few people including the number of people who use the preserve. Her message is that users need to understand that it is a preserve, not a park; that it was created with a lot of hard work and that we should take care of this irreplaceable resource. In late May 2014, Preserve Coordinator Robbin Schweitzer passed away suddenly.
