Architect Douglas B. Sydnor writes about fellow architect and father Reginald Sydnor who practiced architecture exclusively in Arizona for more than 35 years starting in the early 1950s. Practicing a "functional" approach which held that architecture should work in all respects - floor plan flexibility, exterior durability, building systems integration - the article gives three examples that illustrates this philosophy. These examples are the Motorola plant near Hayden and McDowell Road, the ASU Hiram Bradford Farmer Education Building, and the St. Luke's Hospital Medical Center project expansion (1965-69) in Phoenix. The article goes on to mention many other important buildings Mr. Sydnor worked on and his philosophy of civic responsibilities. Reginald Sydnor passed away on June 13, 2004 at the age of 75. This column appeared in the publication- Arizona Contractor & Community Magazine - Spring 2016.
