What was once farmland became the site of the Valley's first enclosed shopping mall, Los Arcos Mall, in 1969. Located on the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and McDowell Road, the mall had Sears and Broadway as its anchor tenants. Los Arcos Mall closed in the late 1990s, was torn down in 2001, and SkySong, an innovative collaboration with Arizona State University, has since been developed on the site. Los Arcos Mall started a major architectural trend in Scottsdale: Spanish-Mediterranean Red tile roof, arched entryways, and stucco walls. At the extreme right are two palm trees and the Sears building west entrance. In the center is the Red Robin Restaurant north entrance. The Broadway Store is at the left. Constructed by Gilbert and Dolan Contractors.
