This story "Lessons Learned" from the Papago Salado StoryTour, created in 2012, is a former high school server's account of things learned while working at the Sugar Bowl. She also shares her favorite treat was a bowl of peppermint ice cream with hot fudge and a tall glass of limeade.
This ice cream parlor is still in business on the southeast corner of N. Scottsdale Road and E First Avenue. Originally constructed in 1950, the building first served as a general store that offered both retail and automotive services. In 1958, the building was converted from a Western Auto Service center to a restaurant. Jack Huntress was the original owner, later passing the ever-popular ice cream parlor to his nephew Carroll Huntress. Cartoonist Bil Keane, from his home/office in Paradise Valley, immortalized the Sugar Bowl by using it in several "Family Circus" comics.
The Papago Salado StoryTour collection includes historical images and stories that connect the authentic history of the Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Tempe regions in Arizona with specific buildings and places. Audio clips provide short accounts about the people, places and events that shaped these communities. This project was sponsored by the Papago Salado Associations, Inc. in its efforts to support cultural heritage tourism within the regions. It was funded, in part, by an Arizona Humanities Council grant for the scholarly research and development of the project's content.
